First World War Trenches

This new tour, by popular request, visits three of the most famous battlefields of the Western Front in World War I.

YPRES: The battles around this small Flemish town in Belgium comprised the longest single land campaign of WWI and resulted in many hundreds of thousands of casualties. It became known as 'The Salient'. Even today, mention of the names Passchendaele, Messines and Pilkem Ridge evokes the horrors of the First World War. We shall also be attending the nightly and deeply moving 'Last Post Ceremony' at the Menin Gate. Our hotel for this tour is centrally located in the historic town of Ypres.

VIMY RIDGE: Vimy was said to be the most daunting feature on the whole of the Western Front. Costly French attacks in 1915 failed to secure it, but in 1917 the Canadian Corps captured the ridge in one of the few spectacular successes of WW1. We shall visit the trenches and imposing memorial and also, of course, the network of tunnels which were so important to the successful assault.

THE SOMME: The offensive on the River Somme is infamous worldwide for the slaughter that occurred on 1 July 1916, the date the British assault began, when more than 19,000 were killed in just one day! Both the British and the Germans claimed success, but, by the end both sides had suffered hundreds of thousands of casualties.

Our expert guides will help to bring to life the momentous events of WW1 by taking you to some of the existing trenches, tunnels, massive craters, bunkers and monuments. We will also visit some of the many impressive cemeteries that are a feature of this region.
